:- 5.0 out of 5 stars from Sarah -- A magical middle grade novel full of suspense and heart : Oh wow did I love this book. 12-year-old Gauge lives in fictional Bouge-by-the-Sea where the streets are made of cobblestone and the villagers earn their living with their hands. Legend warns of an evil, magical wolf out to kill, who can only be seen by witch-like voyants. Voyants are considered such a threat, they are executed by the all-powerful town Mayor. Gauge, of course, is a voyant; he can see the wolf. Narrated by the delightfully snarky wolf herself (yes, the wolf is female), this is a story about grief, magic, friendship, growing up, and finding the courage to challenge the things we thought we knew. With the timeless feel of a fable, and a plot packed with secrets, it’s a suspenseful and beautiful ride to realizing that “without the dark, the lanterns wouldn’t shine.” Get it now for your middle grade readers, and for yourself. Readers will love rooting for Gauge as he attempts to honor his grandfather, expose corruption, and make friends in a community that seems against him. They will also love the white wolf, Gauge's apparent nemesis, as she tries to complete her centuries long journey. I love that young readers (and adults!) get a glimpse into how we can all process grief differently. I already know I will come back to this book many times, not only for the Wolf’s wisdom, humor, and compassion, but to reconnect with ALL of the memorable characters Jessica Vitalis has created on the page. You will find yourself caught up in the Wolf's tale, as she narrates the story of young Gauge, apprentice to his grandfather the Carpenter. The Wolf represents Death, and Gauge is one of the few citizens of Bouge-by-the-Sea who can actually see her! Labeled a Voyant and mistrusted and even shunned by the townspeople, Gauge has been hidden away and protected by Grandpapá for years. But when Grandpapá dies, Gauge has no choice but to emerge, knowing he might be arrested at any moment. He alone has to deal with the ritual of sending his grandfather's body off in a vessel so his soul can reach the Sea-in-the-Sky. ( Reviewed in the United States on September 25, 2021 )
